Affordable St. Louis Travel Guide: The Arch, Free Zoo & More for Less

St. Louis makes it surprisingly easy to plan a memorable getaway without filling every hour with expensive attractions. You can visit one of the country’s best-known monuments, explore a highly regarded zoo with free general admission, enjoy spacious Forest Park, and experience the energy surrounding Busch Stadium—all while deciding where a paid experience is truly worth it.

I first explored St. Louis during a business trip. When some free time opened up, we fit the Gateway Arch, a Cardinals game, and the Saint Louis Zoo into one very long day. It proved that the city’s highlights can be combined when time is limited, although most travelers will enjoy them more over two days.

This guide shows you how to build an affordable St. Louis trip around a few worthwhile priorities rather than a long list of admission fees.

Where to Stay for Convenience and Value

For a short visit, your best location depends on the attractions you most want to see.

Downtown is convenient for the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, and Ballpark Village. Staying within walking distance can reduce transportation and parking costs, especially if an Arch visit and Cardinals game are your main priorities. However, hotel prices may rise during home games and major events.

Near Forest Park can be a better fit if you plan to spend most of your time at the Zoo, art museum, science center, or other park attractions. The area also gives you access to MetroLink stations for trips toward downtown.

Before booking, compare the complete cost—not just the nightly room rate. Add parking, taxes, transportation, and any resort or destination fees. A slightly more expensive hotel with included parking or a walkable location may cost less overall.

Ride to the Top of the Gateway Arch

The Gateway Arch is the experience I remember most clearly. The tram ride takes you inside the monument to the observation area at the top, where narrow windows reveal an impressive view across St. Louis and the Mississippi River. The ride itself is unusual, and the view makes the experience feel distinctly different from simply photographing the Arch from the grounds.

Walking through Gateway Arch National Park and entering the museum beneath the Arch do not require a tram ticket. The tram ride is the paid portion and is the experience to prioritize if your budget allows.

Tickets frequently sell out, so reserve a time through the official Gateway Arch website before your trip. Prices and hours can change, and same-day availability is not guaranteed. Allow additional time to pass through security before your scheduled experience.

Affordable Arch Tip

If you are driving, investigate parking before arriving. The Arch offers advance preferred parking at Stadium East Garage, which is also near Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village. Planning the Arch and the ballpark area together can help you avoid moving the car and paying to park twice.

Experience Busch Stadium

Even if baseball is not the sole reason for your trip, a Cardinals game brings a lively energy to downtown St. Louis. Attending a game at Busch Stadium was one of the three experiences we chose during our limited free time, and it gave us a completely different view of the city from the quiet observation area at the top of the Arch.

Ticket prices vary considerably by opponent, date, seat location, and demand. For better value, compare several games before choosing travel dates. Weekday games and less in-demand matchups may offer better options than rivalry games or popular weekends.

Budget for more than the ticket. Parking, food, and drinks can quickly make an affordable seat expensive. Eating before entering the stadium and using MetroLink or walking from a downtown hotel may reduce the total.

If the Cardinals are away—or a game does not fit your budget—you can still walk around the exterior of Busch Stadium and visit Ballpark Village. Stadium tours are another option on select dates, but schedules vary around games and special events.

Visit the Saint Louis Zoo

The Saint Louis Zoo is one of the strongest reasons to consider St. Louis for an affordable trip. General admission is free, making it possible to spend several hours exploring without purchasing an attraction ticket for every person in your group.

The Zoo sits inside Forest Park and is large enough to be a main event rather than a quick stop. Some rides, attractions, food, and special experiences cost extra, but they are optional. Decide in advance whether you want any add-ons instead of purchasing them spontaneously throughout the day.

Although admission is free, official Zoo parking is not. Travelers willing and able to walk may find free street parking in parts of Forest Park, but availability is not guaranteed. Arriving early can give you more time and more parking choices.

Check the Zoo’s current hours before visiting because they change seasonally and may be adjusted for special events.

Discover More Free Attractions in Forest Park

The Zoo is only one reason Forest Park works so well for budget-conscious travelers. The park is also home to several cultural attractions offering free general admission, including:

  • Saint Louis Art Museum
  • Missouri History Museum
  • Saint Louis Science Center
  • Forest Park trails, green spaces, and scenic areas

Special exhibitions, films, parking, and certain activities may carry fees, but travelers can build much of a day around the free portions.

Do not try to squeeze every Forest Park attraction into one visit. Choose the Zoo plus one museum that genuinely interests you. This creates a more enjoyable day and leaves room for walking, meals, and unexpected discoveries.

A Comfortable Two-Day St. Louis Itinerary

We managed the Arch, Zoo, and a Cardinals game in one long day, but this two-day version offers a better balance.

Day 1: The Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium

Start at Gateway Arch National Park. Explore the free museum and grounds, then take the tram to the top if you have reserved tickets. Allow time to enjoy the view rather than treating the visit as a quick photo stop.

Afterward, walk toward Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village. If the Cardinals are playing, attend the game. Otherwise, explore the area, consider a stadium tour if available, or enjoy an unhurried meal downtown.

Because the Arch and Busch Stadium are close to each other, grouping them on the same day reduces transportation time and parking changes.

Day 2: The Zoo and Forest Park

Begin at the Saint Louis Zoo, preferably near opening time. Spend the morning seeing the exhibits that interest you most.

After lunch, choose one more Forest Park attraction—the art museum, history museum, or science center—or simply enjoy the park. Keeping the second half of the day flexible prevents a free day from turning into an exhausting checklist.

How to Keep a St. Louis Getaway Affordable

Choose One Paid Highlight

For many visitors, the Arch tram or a Cardinals game will be the main splurge. Build the rest of the trip around free attractions instead of paying for several major experiences every day.

Group Attractions by Area

Pair the Arch with Busch Stadium, and pair the Zoo with other Forest Park attractions. This saves time and may reduce parking or rideshare costs.

Consider MetroLink

MetroLink connects the airport, downtown, the Stadium station, and the Forest Park area. Compare the cost of transit with hotel parking, attraction parking, and rideshares. Check the official trip planner and service alerts shortly before traveling.

Check the Event Calendar Before Booking

Cardinals games, conventions, festivals, and major events can affect hotel availability and prices. If your dates are flexible, compare an event weekend with a quieter period before reserving a room.

Treat “Free” Attractions Realistically

Free admission does not mean a completely free day. Account for parking, meals, optional attractions, and transportation. Bring a refillable water bottle where permitted, set a souvenir budget, and decide which extras matter before arriving.

Verify Costs Close to Your Trip

Travel prices change. Instead of relying on an old sample budget, check official admission, parking, transit, and event pages before booking. This guide focuses on the decisions that keep working even when the exact prices change.

Is St. Louis Worth Visiting on a Budget?

Yes. St. Louis offers a combination that is increasingly difficult to find: recognizable attractions, several excellent free institutions, and neighborhoods that can be grouped into practical sightseeing days.

The Gateway Arch gave me the most memorable view, the Cardinals game added the excitement of a local tradition, and the Zoo delivered hours of entertainment without a general admission charge. We experienced all three in one demanding day, but a two-day visit would let most travelers enjoy them at a much better pace.

Choose the paid experience that matters most to you, build around St. Louis’s free attractions, and leave enough room to enjoy the city rather than racing through it.
